What is Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS)?

The Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS, pronounced ALL-Tecs) is health insurance for individuals who are age 65 or older, or who have a disability, and require nursing facility level of care. Services can be provided in institutions or through home and community-based settings.

How Do I Apply for ALTCS?

You can apply online for AHCCCS Medical Assistance, Nutrition Assistance, and Cash Assistance using Health-e-Arizona Plus (HEAplus). You may apply for yourself, your family, or someone close to you. To speak directly with ALTCS, call toll-free at 888-621-6880.

Am I Eligible for ALTCS?

To qualify for ALTCS, you must:

• Have a Social Security Number
• Be a resident of Arizona
• Be a citizen or a qualified immigrant
• Reside in an approved living arrangement (certified nursing facility or certified assisted living facility)

ALTCS Financial Eligibility Requirements

ALTCS evaluates an applicant's financial situation including income such as wages, Social Security benefits, pensions, veteran's benefits, IRAs, and annuities. To qualify:

• Monthly income must not exceed $2,349
• Individuals must have no more than $2,000 in liquid assets
• Married couples may have more due to shared expenses (ask for the Community Spouse Information Form)

ALTCS Medical Eligibility Determination

After financial eligibility is confirmed, a registered nurse or social worker will assess your medical condition during a face-to-face interview. A score of 60 or more points is needed to qualify for long-term care services.

Can a Family Member Be My Paid Caregiver?

Yes. Family, friends, or neighbors can be paid caregivers for ALTCS participants. The hiring process typically takes about one week. Each caregiving relationship is matched to meet unique needs.
